Travertine coasters are slabs of natural limestone that sit under a glass or mug. Before you buy a set, check the stone, what happens to condensation, the underside, the size, the shape, the heat it takes and the care it needs.
The Tufa Travertine Stone Coaster Set is natural honed travertine, a limestone, not a printed pattern on another material. Check the material line of any stone coaster: real stone has weight and a grain that differs on every piece.
A cold glass sweats. On the Tufa coasters the pores of the stone are left open, so that water is drawn into the surface instead of pooling under the glass and running onto the table.
Bare stone on a wooden table can mark it. Each Tufa coaster has small cork feet underneath, so the stone itself never touches the tabletop. Look for feet or a backing on any stone coaster.
The Tufa coasters are about 10 cm across, wide enough for a large mug, a tumbler or a wine glass. Measure the base of the widest glass you use and leave a little room around it.
Tufa comes in three shapes: circle, hexagon and square. Each set is four coasters in one shape. Circles sit softly on a round table, hexagons stack into a neat column and squares suit straight-edged surfaces.

Wipe travertine with a damp cloth and let it air dry. Do not soak it, and keep citrus and vinegar away: acids mark limestone. If wine spills, blot it and rinse with plain water. A little stone sealer once a year helps.
